The King’s chamber was illuminated only by the soft light of the full moon where the King and Queen lay together. Riley was fast asleep, her head resting on Liam’s chest, her very pregnant belly snuggled safely against his side. Liam looked over at his sleeping wife, his heart swelling with love for her and their sons. In three short weeks, his family will grow to five; that time coming very quickly now.

Cordonian Royal Palace

He lay awake; sleep eluding him again for another night. Mentally organizing his schedule for the upcoming month, his thoughts eventually returned to that conversation with Drake that they had on the beach the day before. His confession...

‘Watching you with Brooks, all these years... I want that too.’

‘Pretending to be happy is pretty damn exhausting.’

Sighing, Liam was pleasantly surprised when he heard a soft voice.

No one else would have caught it, but Liam did. He ‘read between the lines’ of what Drake had said, like he was remembering a bad dream. Did Drake just admit that he still had feelings for his wife? Were those feelings that he had years ago still present and relevant to him?

“How long have you been awake?” Riley whispered.

He kissed her forehead and placed his hand on her baby bump. Stroking her belly, he could feel the soft kicks under his palm.

“Not long, love” he murmerred.

“What are you thinking about?” Liam hesitated before answering.

Riley turning her head to look up at him, “you think too much sometimes.”

“A conversation that I had. I am not quite sure if it was real or if it was a daydream.” Liam kept his answer opaque on purpose, not wanting to divulge too much detail to her.

Liam chuckled, “Are you complaining?”

“Never,” she replied, yawning. “I love you,” she added sleepily.

His body relaxed, as he closed his eyes, “I love you more.” he murmured, tightening his arm around her protectively.

Cordonian Palace Ballroom

The Ballroom was filled with guests awaiting the King’s announcement scheduled for later in the evening.

Royalty from neighboring kingdoms, nobility, politicians, and ambassadors from allied countries came from long and short distances to partake in the black-tie festivities. Music filled the air as waitstaff circulated amongst the crowd with glasses of wine and flutes of champagne.

“I’m glad you decided to attend this event with me,” Olivia said smiling at Alex.

“I must be honest with you, Livvie. I usually attend these functions as the enforcer. I am not used to wearing a ‘monkey suit’,” Alex smirked. He seemed to be comfortable among all the guests, nonetheless.

Olivia grinned back at her partner, but her smile quickly faded when she spotted Amalas and Leo huddled together on the other side of the dance floor. They appeared to be deep in conversation and were not paying any attention to their surroundings.

Alex noticed Olivia’s expression change. “Everything okay?” he asked with concern. She nodded, trying to force the smile back onto her lips.

“I thought that Leo was coming on his own tonight.”

“Liv, that doesn’t mean that he can't talk to anyone once he gets here,” Alex rebutted. Olivia sighed loudly and continued to watch the couple from afar.

A waiter approached, carrying a tray of hors d’oeuvres. Alex accepted a small sampling as Olivia continued to study the couple without saying another word. Alex shook his head; he knew what was bothering her. He also wished, he was mistaken.

As the orchestra began to play the first few notes of the Cordonian national anthem, the press began to gather around the dais waiting for the King to enter the ballroom.

The King’s guard fell into strategic positions when the herald announced the arrival of the Royal family.

Liam strode up to the lectern that was atop the dais wearing his full military regalia. Riley, walking with Eleanor, joined him and stood next to his side. Regina and Leo stood close by next to the dais.

The crowd hushed in anticipation. Clearing his throat once before speaking, Liam began, “Good evening, everyone,” he proclaimed.

“It is my pleasure and honor to welcome you all here tonight. I know many have been waiting patiently for the queen and I to make an official announcement concerning our ‘additions’ to the Royal family.” Liam turned to wink at Riley.

The ballroom attendees erupted in whoops and cheers.

Liam acknowledged his delighted guests with a broad smile and waited a few minutes for the accolades to subside. Continuing with, “thank you, thank you!”

“Ladies and gentlemen, I am delighted to have my princess here to help me....” Liam turned and beamed, chuckling as Ellie clapped her hands with a peal of laughter as her uncle Leo scooped her up and joined his brother.

“Well, Ellie, what do you think?” Leo asked, smirking at Liam.

“Daddy, look.” Ellie exclaimed and pointed to a bevy of blue balloons filled with helium that were being released behind the crowd overtop the dance floor.

“Everyone, our twin boys, our princes, are expected to arrive at the end of this month.” Liam lifted Riley’s hand tenderly to kiss.

Riley joined Liam as he took her hands and led her to stand beside him at the lectern.

Thrilled at the excitement, Liam continued once the audience returned their attention back to him.

Liam waited for the crowd to settle down after the announcement.

The applause was deafening as everyone celebrated.

After posing for pictures by the press, Liam led Riley to the dance floor as the orchestra began to play the beginning notes of ‘Clair de Lune’. As they danced, it felt like time stood still; as guests formed a circle around them, Liam kissed Riley’s hand and placed it atop his chest over his heart as they swayed together in time to the music.

“It must have something to do with the love of my life in my arms,” Liam simpered.

“How is it, that.... Liam,” as she smoothed down his lapels, “you take my breath away every time I see you.”

“Always the charmer, Your Majesty." Riley whispered, kissing his lips sweetly.

Drake held Delaney close to his chest as they watched the King and Queen move together in the center of the dance floor.

“They look so perfect together,” Delaney sighed. Her voice was laced with envy.

“Don’t worry, you’ll find someone special someday.” Drake answered sarcastically.

Delaney laughed. “That’s so easy for you to say.” Slapping his arm.

Drake grinned, “you'are damn straight, Leigh. When I first met you, I had no idea what my future would hold. You showed me things that I had only dreamed of having with someone. … and I have treasured every minute of your love.”

Growling, he leaned over and kissed her fiercely on the lips. Just as Riley and Liam walked past them. Delaney noticed the look on Drake’s face when he locked eyes with Riley. It gave her an uneasy feeling. He seemed to be lost in thought.

Smiling playfully at him, Delaney asked in jest, “I’m in love with you too?"

She frowned. “Something wrong?”

His eyes shifted away from Riley, and he shook his head.

“No, nothing at all.”

But he didn’t fool her. Delaney, now was positive that her concerns were justified, stepped back.

“Good evening, you two.” Riley beamed as she turned towards Delaney and Drake.

“You two are getting married! Congratulations...I am so happy for you both.” Riley put her arm around her shoulder for a side hug.

“Thank you so much,” Delaney replied, hugging Riley in return.

“Yes, congratulations you two,” Liam reached over to kiss Delaney’s cheek.

“I am impressed, Walker.” Riley snickered as she hugged her friend.

“Wow, settling down and saying goodbye to the bachelor life.” Liam smirked, shaking Drake's hand.

“Who would have thought,” Riley chuckled.

“Yeah, yeah, Brooks, get your shots in now.” Drake responded, not making eye contact.

Interrogation Room A, Interpol Headquarters, Lyon, France

Lena sat back on her chair with her hands folded in her lap. She was flanked by two men in dark suits. One of the men was a middle-aged man with salt and pepper hair. His name was detective Lefebvre, and he had been assigned by Inspector Ryerson to investigate her case. The other man was the head of Psychiatrics and was assigned to conduct an evaluation of her psychological state by King Liam Rys of Cordonia.

Across the table, sat Lena’s legal defense attorney, assigned to represent her by the Royal estate of Vallenheim.

Detective Lefebvre cleared his throat.

“Miss Runarsdottir, I understand you are familiar with the Cordonian Royal family?”

Lena nodded. “Yes, I have met King Constantine Rys, my father. My stepmother, Queen Sigrid, raised me when my mother Eleanor Rys was murdered. I know of but never met my brother Liam or my stepbrother Leo.”

“And what do you know about them?” he asked.

Lena’s mouth went dry. She felt like she was trapped in a nightmare.

“I don’t have any other information about them,” she lied.

“Do you mean to tell me that you knew nothing about your brothers even though you were caught outside the buildings they were in this past summer?”

Lena stared at him unflinching.

“How did you know where to go?” he asked again.

“I’m sorry, I can't help you.”

Lefebvre slammed his fist against the table, making Lena jump in surprise.

“Don't play with me. You’re either lying or delusional.”

Lena bit her lip. She sat stoically and kept her emotions hidden.

“I am not playing around. I have no information.”

Feeling frustrated, Detective Lefebvre changed his strategy.

“Miss Runarsdottir, who is Bastien Lykel?

“Who?”

“Bastien Lykel,” he repeated.

Lena’s face paled. “I don’t know anyone named Bastien.”

“Are you sure?” he pressed.

“We have CCTV evidence of your conversation with him in the holding cells at the Cordonian Palace.”

“I-I-” she stammered.

“You were seen talking to him at least three times before you escaped those holding cells in Cordonia. Is that correct?”

Again, Lena sat in silence.

“Choose wisely, Miss Runarsdottir, and answer my questions. What is the nature of your relationship with Bastien Lykel?”

Lena’s breathing quickened and her hands began to shake. If she told the truth, she was dead.

“Let the records show that Miss Runarsdottir is not cooperative.”

Cordonian Ballroom

Leo was speaking to Rashad at the bar when Liam approached after having a debate with an American ambassador.

“Hey Li, I see you survived your conversation with Smithfield.” Leo smirked as Liam ordered a scotch and shot it back quickly.

“Barkeep, another round for my brother and I’ll take the same.”

“Why, thank you Leo.” Liam clapped his back.

“Where is your beautiful Queen?”

“Riley is upstairs with Ellie. Being so close to her due date, she needs to be off her feet to rest from tonight’s festivities. She is exhausted.”

Leo nodded. “Totally understandable, but Li, why are you still down here?”

“Because I need to talk with you and apologize about the other day.” Liam responded.

“No apologies needed. I was being an asshole and you called me out.” Leo grinned.

“Well, I overreacted. You pressed a nerve when you mentioned father.”

Leo smirked, “good, because I agree with you and I believe you are ‘right on the money’.

Liam chuckled, shaking his head.

“Again, that’s what makes you the better King,” Leo winked

“I do have information for you." Leo continued. "Amalas gave me an update on Interpol’s case on Lena and Bastien.”

‘Liam winces slightly at the mention of Lena, but he does not interrupt.’

“Lena is being uncooperative when questioned by the detectives. Nice touch, by the way, for assigning a psychiatrist to oversee her testimony.”

“Well, it’s the least I could do knowing what father did to her, and her future.”

“’Amalas has uncovered a few suspicious ‘coincidences’, but nothing damning enough’ to help shed light as to what her motives are.”

“So far, the information that he divulged on the estate of Vallenheim has been verified as true. It was uncovered that he has affiliations with members of the Vallenheim royal guard.”

“Has there been any progress on Bastien’s involvement?” Liam inquired.

“Director Ryerson has scheduled an official update for Monday morning with me. Apparently, Interpol has uncovered a black ledger. It was 'hidden in plain sight'."

“Care to join me, Leo?”

Leo responded, “I will be here.”

I finished the relationship post ( family guy death pose) Right now it's mostly like. Who's with who and familial stuff. A lot of uncertainties, that'll probably change in the future. But with that all said, here. I spent way longer on this than I should have ha

Prof Oak - Had a thing with Agatha sometime in the past. Most likely didn't end up together long term ( I mean obviously) and Oak married someone else. She's no longer alive, as is their child, alas.

Brock - focused on work, but is bi questioning ( considering dating men)

Glacia - Okay so. I saw one hc that Glacia was Siebold's mom and it stuck with me for so long. So I think she had a husband, that left one way or another ( either he died or she divorced him) and she's been single ever since. Her relationship with Siebold is…. complicated. Edit: Glacia is no longer Siebold's mom, rather she's his aunt and legal guardian. They're relationship is still complicated, but there's a level of care here.

Drake - Not interested in relationships

Steven - with Wallace.

Archie - after prison and a lot of therapy, I imagine he gets back with Maxie

Maxie - Same as above.

Shelly - Shelly x Courtney is an interesting ship I've seen but not sure if I want to make it canon. Shelly does get a lot of bitches tho.

Matt - Same with Matt lol. Matt x Tabitha is something I've considered but not sure on. Probably not, given how both parties are, but I'm keeping the option open.

Courtney - Look above at Shelly. Also she does have that obsession with Maxie, though I'm not sure if I want that to be familial or romantic.

Tabitha - Look above at Matt. Tabitha is. Interesting to say the least. The more I think about it, the more I think the ship I mentioned above…. probably wouldn't work. Same with Shelly and Courtney to an extent. Honestly I think he's perfectly fine being single.

Viola - *clenches fist* Viola and Perrin are so freaking cute but I don't think they fit in my timeline!!!! So sadly, Viola's gf is someone else.

Grant - Has major feelings for Siebold, but unsure if he feels the same way.

Korrina : Wants a girlfriend so bad ( another sad case of two characters being at different points in the timeline so I can't ship them within the au. This time it's Bea)

Ramos - Was married to his husband for a long time, until he unfortunately passed away. He tries not to let it get him down.

Clemont- His sister keeps trying to get him to date someone lmao. He's moreso interested in his machinery but maybe one day?

Valerie - Debating if I want her to already be with Grant and is aware of the budding feelings between him and Siebold ( it ends in a poly) or just have her single in her own world.

Olympia - Single and is completely fine with that.

Wulfric - has a wife and two kids of his own! Loves them a whole bunch.

Bede- Similar to Hop. Though I'm honestly just having fun writing his platonic relationships with everyone. He did mistake his platonic feelings/friendship with Naomi for a crush but he quickly realized it wasn't the case.

Kabu - Uncertain only bc I like so many hcs. Like I like him and Peony together but also just him vibing by himself is fun. Also him and Melony is cute. So yeah, not sure.

Bea - Eh. She's more focused on school and martial arts to care.

Allister - Has experienced a crush before but is waaaay to shy to do anything about it. Grateful to have the crush as a friend though.

Gordie - Ends up with Milo

Piers - I might change this later only bc I'm really thinking about it, but I do see him in a poly relationship with Leon and Raihan. Again might change.

Raihan - Look above. But unlike piers, him and Leon are always end game.

Leon - Again. Look above.

Rose - Had a relationship with Cassandra before realizing she was pregnant was Carol. Was pretty much married to his work after that.

Oleana - similar case to Courtney, though maybe after a lot of therapy she gets with a nice lady.

Mustard and Honey are a couple, with Hyde.

Peony - Similar case to Kabu. Not sure. He has Peonia and recently Carol so he's honestly living his best life.

Klara - Way too toxic to be in a lasting relationship atm. She probably gets better after IoA but uh. Yeah. Not a great dating life.

Avery - Probably had never dated anyone ever…..yeah I can see him and Klara getting together at some point. It is, surprisingly, pretty healthy.

Sada and Turo are, miraculously, together in this au. They're also both dead.

Clavell- Unsure, waiting for the indigo disk to come. To really make my judgement. Was planning on giving him a husband.

Nemona - Unsure. Power of friendship real tho.

Tyme is the opposite with a husband of her own.

Iono doesn't date cause that would mess with her viewers.

Katy and Saguaro seem really cute,I'm considering it.

Jacq - Single dad ( Ramona). Is unaware of a theater teacher's feelings towards him.

Geeta and Rika definitely has a Thing but neither of them really addresses it. They're in their own world.

Poppy - Just wants Larry to say he likes Hassel and Brassius already. Also thinks boys have cooties.

Grusha - Was too depressed to consider dating anyone but is coming around to the idea.

Tulip - Just doesn't have the time to date

Those Empty Eyes by Charlie Donlea was the final book of the season for my local mystery book club. It has really great reviews on Amazon but for me I felt it was pretty mediocre.

The beginning was really eventful and kept my interest. I liked the main character and thought she was credible. Most of the characters in the novel are realistic to a point and keep the novel flowing. The events are entertaining and not hard to follow. There was one character that could’ve been completely cut from the entire book and the story would’ve still made sense. But I understand why they kept her, she was the reporter that gave the book its title so she had to keep coming back around.

I did not like the odd back and forth in this book. There were a few time jumps in the main story and then a back story from multiple points of view. Unfortunately that back story gave away who the killer was in the first and second flash backs which is what made me lose interest in the middle. I just wanted to see how she’d figure it out and wrap up the storyline. The ending isn’t really a shock if you paid attention to the flashbacks. I was surprised how many good reviews this book got, a lot of people didn’t see it coming.

I’d recommend it for a read once, probably wouldn’t read it again.

Chapter Summary – Sophie joins the ladies of the court at the palace for the garden tea party hosted by Madeleine (the Queen in waiting). At the palace, secrets are revealed.

Marabelle trotted at an effortless pace alongside the glistening water of the shoreline as Sophie sang along to a song playing through her ear buds.

‘I’d surrender everything’

Sophie softly touched her cheek remembering the birthday kiss from Prince Liam on the dance floor at the Beaumont Bash. To say she was delighted would be an understatement. Sophie was smitten. The attention the charming prince showered on her made her ‘weak in the knees’ and wanting more.

It was a beautiful and warm summer morning. The sun shone brightly, and the water glistened; it was going to be a sweltering day. Starting to feel the heat, she lifted her long hair off her shoulders to clip into a ponytail and decided to return to the estate for a shower.

As Sophie and Marabelle got closer to the estate, alongside the entrance to the stable, Sophie spotted Drake chatting with Maxwell and Daniel. She knew that Drake was at the estate for his weekly maintenance check on the stable and to set the weekly directions for the stable hands.

Maxwell and Daniel were enjoying their newfound friendship. Sophie shook her head with a smile knowing that the pair could eventually develop that friendship into something more. She was thrilled for them, knowing that their personalities would complement the others' well. Daniel’s laid-back ways will be a calming presence for Max, who she knew was searching for a life partner of his own.

The question was whether Daniel would ever plan a move from New York to Cordonia. She knew, like herself, he did not have family in the US and he had no commitments to hold him back. Sophie had felt guilty for leaving her dear friend behind and alone. He just needed a reason to join her. And he found it!

She was elated to see the relationship between Max and Daniel ignite at the Bash. Daniel, being such a sweet guy, deserved the attention of a well-meaning partner; a partner he could not find in New York. In her opinion, Max would fill that role perfectly.

Everything was going well with Sophie’s move. Settling into her new home easily, she was looking forward to a future in Cordonia. Her extended family was doing everything possible to make her feel comfortable and secure at the estate. In September, when she begins her studies at the university in the Capital, she will have Maxwell with her to show her around and be a guide as well.

Now that she was 18 and ‘legal’, Max had promised to take her into the Capital to a nightclub. She knew, however, that while Max’s intentions were well-meaning, his focus is shifted now to her best friend, Daniel. Sophie did not mind though, because in all honesty, her focus was now on a certain prince.

“Good morning, Squirrel!” Daniel sauntered over to greet her as Marabelle slowed to a stop.

“Hey Daniel, you are up and about early this morning.” Sophie dismounted and moved to give her best friend a hug.

Maxwell joined the pair, “’Squirrel’...I wish I would have thought of that nickname. It’s perfect for you!”

“Hi Max,” Sophie grinned. “Oh no, not you, too!”

“Beaumont, what is it with you? What is wrong with calling her Sophie?” Drake raised his brow and smirked at the look on Max’s face.

“Just because you do not have the gift of humor doesn’t mean I have to be silenced.” Maxwell replied back.

“You do realize you are calling your cousin a ‘bushy-tailed rodent’,” Drake countered.

“Ookay... this conversation is going sideways.” Sophie shook her head, reaching for Marabelle’s reins.

“Come on girl, let's get you a snack,” leading her horse towards the stable.

“That’s my cue. Wait up, Sophie, I will walk with you.”

Drake followed, first chuckling and mock punching Max’s arm.

Sophie and Drake walked together towards the stable, an awkward air of uncertainty between them.

After a few minutes, the chime of Drake’s phone broke the silence.

“You must be in demand today,” Sophie quipped.

“Yes, well, I am being called back to the palace.” Drake sighed slipping his phone back into his back pocket.

Sophie smiled softly, “duty calls.”

“I wanted to check up on the horses here before it gets too hot out today.”

Drake patted the side of Marabelle’s face, “how are we feeling, girl?”

“I am taking her back to her stall to give her some shade and treats,” Sophie grinned at her horse.

“I have to say that I am impressed. Marabelle settled in here at the estate quickly. I can tell she likes you.” Drake smiled, looking at Marabelle.

Sophie looked over at Drake, beaming, “awe, thank you.”

With Marabelle now in her stall, Sophie closed the gate, securing a bucket of apples and watermelon to the inside railing.

“I wish I could spend more time with you today, girl.” Sophie stroked the horse's nose as Marabelle happily munched on an apple piece.

Drake took off his hat and wiped his brow with a handkerchief.

“It is so hot out here. I would love nothing more than to jump in the lake. But I can’t.”

“Yes, and I need to jump in the shower and get ready. I am expected at the palace at 1 p.m. for the garden party.”

“A word of advice?” Drake looked at Sophie expectantly.

“Beware the ladies of the court. Do not trust any of them...they are a den of snakes.”

Maxwell snickered as he walked up, “Do not mind Drake, my cynical friend. They are not all particularly bad.”

“Well, what do I know?” Drake said with defiance.

“What my sister had to tolerate from those women, everything that I was afraid of happening, happened.”

“Will Savannah be at the garden party, Drake?” Sophie asked.

Drake laughed sarcastically, “not on your life.”

“But they are not like you, Squirrel.” Maxwell interjected.

Sophie looked between the pair. The garden party would be the first time she would be interacting ‘one on one’ with these same women today.

“Thank you for the vote of confidence, Max. I think?”

Cordonian Royal Palace Courtyard

Queen-in-waiting Countess Madeleine Amaranth, stood beside Queen mother Regina under the trellis personally greeting the ladies of the Royal court and invited guests to her inaugural garden tea party. Not sparing any expense, Madeleine was in her element, feeling superior in station and was not shy in showing it.

Sipping lemonade, Sophie sat with her Aunt Bethany, Duchess Adelaide and Princess Beatrice of Belgium. If anything, it was entertaining watching the interactions between the guests.

“Sophia, you are a delightful addition to court.” Adelaide was very inquisitive, noticing that Prince Liam had been paying a lot of attention to her the night of the Beaumont Bash.

Sophie politely smiled but stayed silent as Adelaide continued to drone on about nothing in particular.

“Well, I can tell you one thing, my dear. When I was young and beautiful, men always wanted me. No matter what. But now? It’s like I’m just invisible to them. And it's so infuriating!”

“Oh, I understand,” Princess Beatrice said, rolling her eyes.

“Adelaide, how is your husband, Godfrey? I have not seen him in the Capital for quite some time.”

Bethany inquired, raising her eyebrow.

At that, Sophie stood from the table, “please excuse me a moment. Auntie Beth, I am going to stretch my legs.”

As she travelled towards the terrace outside the palace, Sophie paused when she overheard her name being mentioned on the other side of the tall hedge.

“Pour qui se prend-elle? Pensant que le prince s’intèresserait à elle.”

(Who does she think she is? Thinking that the prince would be interested in her.)

Sophie peered through the branches and noticed Lady Kiara standing beside Lady Penelope next to a dessert table.

Penelope nodded her head in agreement and whispered loudly, “exactly! The nerve of that American.”

Feeling a tap on her shoulder, Sophie turned to her left.

“Lady Sophia, you look lost.” Olivia grinned at Sophie’s expression of surprise.

“Why are you acting so surprised, Sophie? You should have expected this from Kiara and Penelope.”

Sophie frowned and responded, “What’s that supposed to mean, Duchess?”

“Oh, you will learn quickly on how to play their game,” Olivia replied with a mischievous smile.

Olivia, herself, was in the process of finding out information on the newest member of the court. Especially since she had also noticed that she had caught the eye of Prince Liam.

Sophie could only sigh in response. Although she had been included into the circle of ladies of the court, she still had to find her place in the court. To do that, she had a lot of information to discover.

After the awkward conversation, Sophie excused herself to enter the palace to freshen up and to temporarily escape from the hot Mediterranean sun.

Entering the sitting room, Sophie sat down on a sofa and pulled out her phone.

The leggy strawberry blonde opened the large ornate door to the Crown Prince’s private quarters. After spending the previous evening with Leo, she left her lover to leave the palace to return to her apartment in the Capital.

Veronica was bound by a Cordonian Arrangement, and a non-disclosure agreement, and spent several nights a week with Leo. Madeleine was well aware of his mistress and when she passed the future queen, she made no eye contact but held her head up high and smirked.

Madeleine stalked into the Royal suite in search of her betrothed. When she found him sipping his coffee on the veranda, she did not hold back her rage.

“Of all days, you must flaunt your trollip while I am hosting my garden party?"

“Oh, it's you? Why are you not at your party?” Leo sneered, daring Madeleine to respond.

Madeleine did not back down and scowled, “It is your duty to attend the party, as the future King, in the address to the court. Instead, you are fucking your whore! Some King you will make!”

Immediately standing, Leo slammed his cup against the table, smashing it.

“I advise you to choose your next words very carefully.” Leo seethed, slowly walking inside.

“I am Royal by birth, Countess. You do not presume anything!”

Leo continued to walk past Madeleine to enter his chamber and slammed the door behind him.

“Just leave. You’re good at that.” Madeleine shouted in response and stormed out of the Royal suite, incensed, to return to the garden party.

Entering the powder room next to the sitting room by the palace courtyard, Madeleine broke down. “You cannot do this to me Leo! You cannot embarrass me with your whore!”

“I should have known that you would flaunt your lovers, but I do not have to see it!”

Sitting down at the vanity, she wiped her tears, cursing herself for forgetting that her make-up bag was up in her room.

After over-hearing a commotion of angry words, Sophie stood and entered the powder room. She froze in place at the undeniable sound of a woman sobbing and crying out.

Madeleine stood up, hearing the door open behind her.

“You heard that?” she says aghast, looking at Sophie.

“Well, you know now, don’t you. I am the worst of fools.”

“Did I really just hear you say that?” Sophie asks, blinking.

“Oh Sophie, do not pretend to be shocked," Madeleine says, brushing back her hair with a trembling hand.

“To be involved with a Rys, means they hold all the cards. It is their birthright.”

“I will be Queen. That is what the Cordonian arrangement is for.”

To say that Sophie was overwhelmed would be an understatement. There was a mix of emotions affecting her in a perfect storm; stunned, terrified, puzzled, and doubt were combining to make her question her place in the court and her self-confidence.

Planning to rejoin the garden party, Sophie appeared from behind the column and walked swiftly away from the sitting room.

Still in the palace, Sophie turned and feeling flustered, she ran face first into a man’s broad chest.

"Whoa, whoa ...hey Sophie". Liam chuckled, holding her arms to slow her impact.

Looking up she was met with his kind, crystal blue eyes, but could not formulate a response. She was truly tongue-tied.

He released her, his hands lingering before pulling away. Sophie could feel her heartbeats pick up, her throat tighten.

As if he sensed her uneasiness Liam spoke first.

"Sophie, I uh... I wanted to ask if you would have time to meet with me and talk after the garden party. I want to get to know you better, and I can tell you've had a rough day."

He cleared his throat.

Sophie spoke quickly, "I would love to get to know you Liam, yes!"

Been Gone Such A Long Time

Vanna bumped the door open with her hip as she hastily tied her long brown hair in a ponytail. The bell above the door jingled, but the noise of Saturday night swallowed the sound of the bell. Someone was very drunkenly singing “Don’t Stop Believing”, a small group of equally drunken fans gathered near the stage to cheer him on. Ugh, that’s right, it’s karaoke night, she thought as she finished her pony tail and hurried toward the bar. She was only ten minutes late, but the backup had already started at the drink station, and she winced at the look Jay shot her from behind the mixing tin he was shaking furiously- far more vigorously than a martini called for, he was bruising the gin on purpose by the look of it. He shook the container in one hand and haphazardly garnished a long island iced tea with the other by plopping a lemon wheel in it, the dark liquid sloshing out over the top of the glass and onto the rubber spill mat below. Vanna slipped past a group of bachelorettes and lifted the trap door to enter the bar area, an apologetic look on her face. “Sorry, Jay, the baby was-“

“Yeah, yeah, it’s all good, V, just get over here and start pouring beers.” Jay rolled his eyes before giving her a wink to prove that his 5 minutes of hating her were up. He wasn’t really mad at her, it had just been a long night and Kayla, the opening bartender, had all but evaporated as soon as the clock struck ten having been at The Hippo since noon. She was supposed to wait for her relief to get there, but she had a date and Jay’s pleading did nothing to guilt her into staying past her shift time. Vanna smiled at him as she reached into the mug chiller for three cold glasses and began pouring Brooklyn Lagers, expertly tilting the glasses to create the perfect head of foam before sliding them down the bar to Jay at the drink station. The two worked seamlessly with Jay calling out beers and wine for Vanna to pour as they dug out from under the mountain of orders. When the crowd around the drink station had dispersed, the patrons properly plied and ready to make fools out of themselves on stage, Vanna helped Jay get things back in order before the next wave hit.

“So, everything good with the kid?” Jay asked over his shoulder as he replenished the lime wedges from a container he’d pulled from a cooler under the bar.

Vanna laughed and shook her head. “Yeah, he’s fine.” She gestured with the towel in her hand. “Just at that age where everything is a fight, there’s always a tantrum to be thrown, and he seems to have a sixth sense for when I’m leaving. Kid was passed out, asleep and snoring, but as soon as I said goodbye to the babysitter and grabbed my keys he was awake and screaming.”

Jay chuckled. “Yeah, I remember when mine was like that.” He laughed again, using tongs to refill a jar of maraschino cherries. “Fiona used to switch” he snapped his fingers with a loud crack, “like a demon possessed her when I’d have to leave for work. Now?” he blew air through his lips and raised his tong hand. “Now I’m lucky if I get a “later, dad” It’s a phase, V, no worries.”

Vanna leaned against the shelving behind the bar and crossed her arms over her chest. “Well don’t tell me that.” Jay laughed. “Is it too much to ask for something in between tantrums and indifference?”

“Yeah, that doesn’t exist.” Jay finished filling the garnish bin and moved to lean against the shelving next to her. He wiped his hands on his apron before crossing his arms and gently nudging her with his shoulder as the group of bachelorettes took the stage for “Dancing Queen”. “So, uh, you hear from the kid’s dad recently? I know he was here to visit a few months back and then…I uh…I know that whole… attack thing happened and you said you had family there and…I’m rambling now. If you don’t want to answer just tell me to shut up.” He turned his head to smile sheepishly at her.

She felt her chest tighten at the mention of the attack, at the thought of him…at the thought of her family. He’d finally gotten in touch with her a full two days after the attacks, those two days passing like months while she waited to hear about the people she cared about. But it had been a quick, curt conversation that hadn’t made her feel much better at all. She sighed, ran a hand over the top of her head and grabbed the end of her ponytail, tugging and twisting it around her fingers. It was her nervous tic, and Jay noticed. “I…no, I haven’t heard anything since...”

Jay leaned over and gave her a one armed hug. “Sorry I brought it up, V, just…I care, that’s all. We don’t have to talk about it.”

“Thanks, Jay,” she leaned into his hug without uncrossing her arms. She knew that he was just trying to show interest, show support. He didn’t know all the ins and outs of her situation. He didn’t know the history of it…and he didn’t know she had a brother. As the group of cosmopolitan drowned girls on stage wound down their song, another wave of patrons started approaching the bar and their moment of reprieve was over. They resumed their positions at the drink station and in front of the taps, and Vanna was glad that she didn’t have to do much thinking to pour beers; she was at The Hippo, her mind was anywhere but.

She went on auto pilot, muscle memory taking over to pour the perfect 8oz servings of wine, her wrist tilting at the same angle each time, arm pulling upwards at the same point of each pour. This way her mind was free to wander from person to person, starting with Bertrand. He’d been the first man she’d fallen for, wide eyed and oblivious, like a deer caught in a hunter’s sights. He was serious and dignified, he stood for all of the things she admired about the nobility, all of the things she wanted but could never have. He’d promised her nothing, and they’d never talked about what their relationship meant if it meant anything at all. They hadn’t done much talking period, if she was being truthful with herself, spending their time alone with their hands roving under each other’s clothing, their lips leaving hot trails and little marks all over one another’s skin. She’d sighed his name into a kiss more frequently than she’d said it in any other manner; he’d pinned her to a wall, a bookcase, a door, more often then he’d stood before her and had a conversation. There wasn’t love to have been lost. He was the father of her child, and it had hurt that he didn’t want to give it a try, to see if they could be a family, find love where they’d found pleasure. He’d said it had been due to familial duties, and that was when she learned that she’d never be good enough for these people, and she didn’t want her child to live that way. She didn’t tell Bertrand about the baby because she didn’t want his pity, didn’t want him to see his son as a burden. She always planned to tell him someday, but someday when she could rightfully refuse any monetary aid he’d try to shove at her to assuage his guilt. She didn’t love him when she left Cordonia, and she didn’t love him now that he’d found her, now that he knew about Bartie. He’d said he wanted to be part of their lives, that since he’d found them he’d felt that he was missing half of himself. But she felt nothing other than relief that he wanted to be involved in Bartie’s life in a real way, and not just by writing a check. Since the attacks though, she’d heard nothing from him, and again, it hurt that this time he’d lied about wanting to be a part of their lives. Two strikes against him and he’d started off down in the count; That night, as she mechanically poured a glass of house red, she decided that she was done considering Bertrand Beaumont family.

Her thoughts went next to her mother. Before leaving Cordonia it had been almost ten years since she heard from Bianca Walker. She was vaguely aware of Jay calling for a Sam Adams and two Amstel Lights, and she poured them as she recalled the last time she’d spoken to her mother on the phone -on her 17th birthday. She hadn’t given any clue that it would be the last time they spoke, simply wished her daughter a happy birthday, told her she missed her, like always, and that she hoped she was doing well, that she was happy…like always. When Christmas came and went followed by New Year’s Eve without a call or card, she and Drake had started to worry. They’d reached out by phone only to find that Bianca had changed her number. They’d sent a letter that hadn’t been returned as undeliverable, so they knew that she hadn’t moved, knew that nothing had happened to her…she had simply just stopped being involved in their lives. The visits had stopped 2 years prior, the invites, 3, and she remembered the painful jumble of mixed feelings she had; my mother wants nothing to do with me, did I do something wrong? How could she just... she remembered the hot tears boiling in her eyes. She remembered Drake’s reaction when he saw how it was affecting her.

“Hey...Savvy,” he hadn’t used that nickname since they were much younger. Hearing it had made her eyes flick up to his as she exhaled slowly. “Screw her. You got me. Always.” She knew Drake must have been hurting just as much, knew he was probably angry and confused just like she was. But he was putting it all aside to take care of her. That’s what Drake did for the people he loved.

She’d given Bianca one last chance when she came to the states. She’d figured, even if they hadn’t spoken, or seen one another, even if Bianca hadn’t tried or even made it seem like she wanted to try, Savannah thought she’d want to know that she was going to be a grandmother. When she’d showed up at Bianca’s family ranch in Texas, she was struck first by the joyful resonance of the wind chime that hung from the porch. She watched, mesmerized as the thin metal rods dangled, swaying in the breeze and catching the sun as they clinked together. The sound and the shine of the sunlight hurdled her back in time to a visit nearly twenty years ago. She was 7, Drake 9, and they were bursting with excitement over the gift they’d made their mother, with Bastien’s help, of course. Bastien had cut the pieces of metal, letting Drake help him punch holes so that they could be strung from a small wooden disk that Savannah had painted. Their mother had beamed and carried on about how gorgeous it was and how lucky she was to receive such a beautiful and thoughtful gift, promising that it would grace her porch forever. The paint was faded and chipped, the wooden disk cracked and nearly split in two from years in the unrelenting Texas sun. But there it still hung. So she hasn’t forgotten about us… That thought and the dilapidated wind chime gave her the courage to walk up the porch steps and knock on the red screen door.

When her mother answered, however, that courage evaporated. The look on Bianca’s face was one of mixed fear, anguish and regret, swirled with a touch of defensiveness, and Savannah wished she could take back the knock, take back her trip to Texas, and go back to New York where it was easy to disappear into the crowd. “Savvy…” she gasped, but quickly regained her composure. “What are you doing here?” the woman asked her, propping the door open just enough to speak, not enough to be welcoming. She crossed her arms over her chest as her graying hair danced on the breeze.

Savannah didn’t know how to answer, so she blurted out, “Just thought you’d like to know you were going to be a grandmother. Just thought you’d like to know that your children are still alive.” She heard the venom in her voice and it both surprised her and didn’t- she was hurt, again, let down, again, by the woman before her. “But I was wrong, I guess, huh?” Bianca said nothing, but Savannah caught her eyes flick up to the wind chime. “This was a mistake…” she followed Bianca’s gaze to the chime before crossing the porch and reaching up to remove the chime from the hook that had been screwed into the porch’s wooden roof. Without a word, she took the chime and turned her back on her mother, climbing into the cab of the truck she’d rented. She drove and drove, tears falling and curses flowing. Bianca Walker wasn’t family anymore.

Vanna was pulled back to the present as she realized that she had overfilled the glass in her hand, cold amber liquid flowing out of the tap and over her fingers. “Shit,” she muttered as she closed the tap and wiped her hand on the rag hanging from her apron. She cleaned off the rim of the glass, poured out a bit of liquid and topped it off achieving the perfect 2 inch foam head before sliding it down to Jay. She let her mind go to one last person- Drake. Drake would always be family. He would always be one of the most important people in her life. But she would always feel a twisting, burning feeling of regret for the way that she’d left him; just a note, but he deserved so much more, and she’d always regret not giving it to him. At the time, she thought she was doing him a favor, leaving before he found out about her child. She remembered, painfully, how destroyed her brother had been when he heard of the loss of his own child- a child he never even got to hold- and she thought that watching her go through a pregnancy, watching her raise a son on her own, would bring things up for him that he’d worked hard to bury. She thought, at the time she left, that she’d be doing him a favor-that he’d be better off without her to worry about, to try to take care of. She knew, now, that she was wrong. Every day she woke up full of missing him. Every day she woke up and knew in her heart that he missed her, too. But every day she woke up in New York City was one more day longer that she’d been away, and as the days turned to years she became embarrassed and anxious to reach out to him, knowing that she’d hurt him with her sudden departure. She wanted to but couldn’t.

When she’d spoken to Bertrand after the attacks, she’d gotten an update that had chilled her very soul- Drake had been shot. She’d sobbed and cried herself to sleep that night, despite Bertrand’s assurances that his surgery had been successful and that he was expected to make a full recovery. The only thing that had made her feel even remotely better is that Bertrand had told her that he was seeing someone, and that she hadn’t left his side, that she would be there for him in his recovery, would be there to help him in whatever way that he needed. Her brother was loved, and from the sound of it, loved fiercely. It was the only thing keeping her from complete devastation, and as much as she wanted to fly back to see him, to beg him to forgive her and to hug him more tightly than she ever had before, she knew that now wasn’t the time- that he needed to focus on healing and having her show up to tear open old wounds wasn’t going to help. She may have lost Bertrand. She may have lost Bianca. But she’d never really lose Drake, and she knew that. Drake Walker and her son were the only family that she had left.

That’s not true, said a voice in the very back of her memory. You have Bastien…you have…there was someone else, someone she knew was there for her, someone she knew had loved her very much as a child…someone she couldn’t quite remember, but she couldn’t completely forget, either. I wonder where she is now…I wonder if she remembers me… Her wondering was cut short as Jay called for more drinks and she pushed all the memories down to focus on the task at hand.

The night wore on in waves as it tended to on karaoke nights, until the clock struck 2am and Jay’s shift came to a close. He helped her restock a few items before she shooed him out. “Go home, Jay, I was late, you’re exhausted. Get home to that adorable little brat of yours.” She gave him a good-natured shove.

“Alright, ain’t gotta tell me twice,” he grinned. “Have a good night, V, hope the last two hours fly for ya.”

Jay lifted the trap door and exited the bar just as the bell above the door jingled, and two more customers walked in. Vanna lifted her gaze from the tap to the door and smiled as she saw one of her favorite regulars. She overheard him greeting Jay amicably before leading the girl he was with over to the bar. Who’s that? She wondered about the girl. Usually he comes with…

“Hey, V…” he said, the tone of his voice slightly off. She let the towel she was drying her hands on fall back down to her apron as she pulled the tap to pour Dan’s beer.

“Hey you, long time no see…where’s-“

“V, we need to talk…”

Two days before they were supposed to leave for the Council’s trip to New York, Claire was perched on the back of the couch behind Drake, gently kneading the tense muscles of his injured shoulder. Her right leg was draped over his other shoulder, his fingers grazing her shin as he closed his eyes , leaning into her touch. “How’s that feel?” she asked, applying pressure to his shoulder blade with her thumb, rubbing in a circular motion.

He winced and let out a low hiss, but he responded with, “Feels amazing, Berkley, don’t you ever stop.” His eyes squeezed even more tightly shut.

Claire grinned. “Ever?” she craned her neck to look down at him, mischief sparkling in her clear blue eyes. “But if I never stop, how can we-“

Without warning, he gripped her leg and pulled her down and around his shoulders and into his lap, his right arm coming around her, his left hand sliding up to cup her cheek. Surprised laughter bubbled from her lips as he absently brushed his fingertips along her arm. A spark of mischief to match hers was reflected in his dark eyes, and a slow smile spread across his face. “In that case, you can stop now,” he said, voice low and full of intent. He dropped his head to catch her lips, but before the kiss could deepen, a buzz interrupted the moment as the phone in Claire’s pocket rang. “You don’t have to get that, do you?” he groaned.

“No way,” she breathed, kissing him back, bringing her hands up to tangle in his hair. But the phone continued to buzz, even after the caller had left a message. “Ugh…maybe I do,” she whined, reaching for her pocket without pulling away from his lips. She waited until she absolutely had to to pull apart, pressing the answer button before checking the caller I.D. “Hello?” she answered, eyes still locked on Drake’s as he continued to brush his fingers along her arm.

“C?” There was alarm and excitement and news in Dan’s voice, and it made Claire sit up straight.

“Dan?” The way she greeted him drew Drake’s attention.

“C…I just left The Hippo…I think I know where Drake’s sister is…you’re not going to believe this…”
